For such a dry and mild winter out here in the Pacific Northwest, people are dropping like flies to the invisible strains of flu’s and bugs propagating in the eerily dry air. I have homies who’ve been sick for weeks, my moms had the flu 3 times already this year! Not only are we in a recession, pinching pennies, holding on to jobs we don’t even necessarily want. But now this… forced into fever, sweats, and bed. Yet looped up on a high repeat, with wellness at a very low success rate. Maybe its a higher powers way of saying…. STEP AWAY, SLOW DOWN..
Or maybe this recession biz has us all worn thin, psychically stressed and weighed down. Microscopically vetting at us.
Either way here’s a spattering of songs that hold a potent dose of ancient wisdom, sonic depth and heavy lidded bliss . Like a bad ass audio vitamin. Digest… Pour one out for the ill.
Flying Lotus "Camel"
[audio:flying_lotus_camel.mp3] ....this must be what it sounds like when the big blue virus
goes to battle with the immune system.
"...Here is an offering and an invitation to contemplate war
and its many faces within ourselves. This piece commences
with sounds of ancient tribal movements in a universal
funeral procession of caskets down an unspeci?ed and
unknown road, opening a grave to the legacy of war--all
war!—as cause to sorrow." (*)
- SIDE B - "PURE LIGHT" (excerpt)
[audio:pure_light_excerpt_jaffe.mp3] “Pure Light begins with a question to be answered only
through prayer, a plea for peace and harmony in a world
of humans in a state of distraction and diminishing human
interaction. The voice of the leading saxophone stands out
as one single being in conversation with a still and quiet
universe, leading the piece deep into an ancient forest pro-
liferating with paths of uncertainty."(*)

A very nice new 7″ from Portland’s own STRATEGY .. (AKA) Paul Dickow.
This music was made using repurposed dusty old reggae mix tapes spliced into loops played back on a 4 track. Mixed live, and processed live using only the finest of analog equipment.
This record is a beautiful adventure of familiar old sounds filtered through a new lens. Dubby fuzzy layers, lots of delicious spring reverb, and some heavy bass. All are very present indeed.
The B side puts me into an unknowing transcendental heavy lidded state every time i listen..
try it at33rpm..? its nice at both.. always a plus!
The vinyl comes in a sealed plastic sleeve. very sexy, took me a week just to break the seal, it looks so nice.
“I’m all about Walt Disney, Coca-Cola, Louis Vuitton, Nike. I want people to remember me the way they know Nike, that level of impact. Who was the last person who really had it like that? When I was a kid, it seems like there was a lot of great pop music. There was George Michael, Michael Jackson.” -Kanye West Fader # 58 interveiw

For me … other than the new digital Cumbia coming out of South America, Dubstep is the most engaging and forward thinking production based music being made right now. Part of whats so exciting is just how unpredictable of a genre it is. It’s a RIGHT NOW MUSIC, still being defined and invented.
Its dark, wet, cement music. sounds like the London streets it comes from… not unlike the wet paved sounds of the Portland Or. streets… hmmmmmm
All in. Join the fun, listen up.
